THE SALAD WAY: REVIEW

SALAD
THE SALAD WAY
THREE BEAN RECORDS, OUT 30 AUGUST
First album in 22 years by ‘90s Camdenistas.

Inspired by Pink Floyd, Wire and Federico Fellini, Anglo Dutch outfit Salad always offered a quirkier view of London life than most of their Britpop peers. That said, their much delayed third LP finds them turning back the musical clock in fine style: “I’ll meet you down the Tate Modern,” coos vocalist Marijne van der Vlugt on Elastica-like opener You Got The Job, while jaunty knees-up Welcome To My World will baffle a Spotify generation for whom Blur vs Oasis chart battle feels as relevant as 1066. Though there are attempts to break free from the creative straightjacket, it’s dream-pop gem Your Face and Bubblegum Lovesick Energy that will have their fans scouring their wardrobes for that old tracksuit top. ***
